A candlelight vigil for restoration of peace and cessation of violence in Manipur was organised by Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) under the aegis of North East Students’ Organization (NESO) this evening at NSF Oking, Naga Club Building, Kohima.
Mutsikhoyo Yhobu, secretary general, NESO & former president of NSF said the candlelight vigil is being organised to show solidarity with the suffering Manipur citizens for more than 50 days.
He informed that NESO had a meeting on June 22 in Guwahati and decided to show solidarity with the citizens of Manipur and appeal to them to shun violence. He also urged both the state and central government to immediately intervene and restore peace in Manipur.
While expressing shock that the Prime Minister of India have not uttered even a single word despite the volatile situation in Manipur ongoing for more than 50 days, Yhobu lamented that “the silence maintained by the Prime Minister is really going to alienate the indigenous peoples of the North-eastern people.”
On this, Yhobu urged the Prime Minister to speak out unless the government of India was nursing a hidden agenda. He also revealed that the NESO team plans to visit Manipur and meet the tribal and Meitei people.
“We hope and pray that this solemn prayer will bring peace in Manipur. Today, as we humbly organise this candle light vigil, we want to inform the state and citizens of Manipur that Naga people and NSF are standing in solitary and condemn the killing which is taking place,” stated NSF president Kegwayhun Tep.
