Dimapur, April 21 (MExN): The residents of Xuvihe, Chatteswari, Lower Manipuri, Upper Manipuri, West Yard and Railway Bazaar colonies in Dimapur are facing grim situation due water logging caused by drainage blockage around Dimapur Railway station. Recent rains have added woes to the problem as large areas in these colonies have remained inundated for days together.

Advisor, Power Department, Nagaland, H Tovihoto Ayemi responded to the problem and instructed the district administration, Dimapur Municipal Council to take immediate steps to clean up the drainage blockage, stated a press release issued by the Media Cell for Advisor. He also informed the Railway authority to also initiate its course of action to clear the drain.

The major drain flowing through a culvert beneath the railway tracks near Railway Bazaar have remained clogged causing drains in colonies to overflow, it stated.

The Advisor was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Rajesh Soundararajan and officials of Sanitation Branch, DMC visited the affected areas to take stock of the situation.

Talking to the residents, Tovihoto said that immediate measures have been initiated to clear the drain and also announced that “steps would be taken at the government level to find out a permanent solution to the persistent problem.”

He directed the district administration and DMC to organise a free medical camp and fogging as there were chances of possible outbreak of water borne diseases which could pose a threat to other areas of Dimapur. The stagnant water is emitting foul smell and is almost black in colour. He said there could be an epidemic outbreak if necessary steps are not taken at the earliest.

He also discussed the matter with an official of Dimapur Railway station and called upon the railway authority to contribute it’s due share to clean up the drainage and to give priority to find a suitable way to resolve the bottleneck stretch of the drain at Railway station area.

Tovihoto also instructed the colony councils and GB to strictly penalize those who dump garbage into the drains which is one of the causes of drains blockage. He pointed out encroachment is another reason that has made the drains narrower.
