Tribal communities are important components of nation building: Union Minister Arjun Munda

Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda said the tribal communities, as important components of nation building, will usher into a new era of progress of growth as development as India celebrates 75 years of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav towards 100 years.

Speaking at the Kohima Village Multipurpose Building foundation stone laying programme at Kohima Village ground, Ziekezou, Munda who was on a three-day visit to Nagaland said, tribal people have one common characteristic of a ‘unique identity, lifestyle and character.’

Adorned with Angami Naga traditional attire, Munda said “I am proud to wear this dress to be a Naga,” adding that Nagas have their own identity and with a history of being a warrior community to protect their traditions and culture.

Describing Nagaland as a progressive state, the Union Minister observed that the state is moving towards urbanisation with development and progress. He expressed delight that facilities are reaching the interior places of the state.

He however, emphasised that there is more to be done, and that the Government of India is working hard to reach the rural areas with infrastructural development to fulfil the desire of the people.

Tribal will be the new identity
Though there had been lot of talk for the tribal people after independence, Minister Minda observed that nothing much has been done. However, he maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen to develop the tribals in the country with action towards protection of tradition, culture and identity.

Besides, he said the central government is sincerely pursuing to urbanise rural areas in the country through infrastructural developments, especially the north eastern states to enable them to be at par with other parts of the country so that they are not left behind.

Munda maintained that ‘tribal will be the new identity of the nation,’ and opportunities would be opened for them here on.

Will extend all help to Nagaland
Stating that he is working with 41 ministries, Munda has assured the state of all possible help and support from the ministries he is working with.

Mentioning the scope and high potential in the field of archery, he suggested that if the state government is interested, to submit a proposal for setting up of an Archery Center in the state and that he would see to make it happen.

He also assured that he will make all possible efforts to fulfil the needs of the state

Meanwhile, the Union Minister informed that he will be visiting the aspirational district Kiphire tomorrow to ensure that all parameters for development of the districts are fulfilled within a time frame.

Munda said his desire is to see that the multipurpose building is constructed with quality workmanship and completed it at the earliest. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, GoI has sanctioned Rs 5 crore through the state tribal affairs department for the project.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio suggested that traditional Naga motifs and designs be incorporated in the building to attract tourists and visitors. “People don’t come to see us imitating others, but to see as real Nagas,” Rio said, adding that Nagas have to continue to preserve and promote their traditions, customs and cultures.

He also thanked the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for the fund and expressed hope that the building would be completed at the earliest for the benefit of not only the Kohima village but the Nagas as whole.
