A village at the Assam-Nagaland border in Mokokchung was hit by a squall on the night of September 20 damaging houses, uprooting trees and utilities.

Though there were no updates from the Mokokchung district administration, sources from the affected Saringyim village informed that the storm hit around 10:30 pm and lasted till midnight. As per information from the village, there was no human casualty and livestock loss but as many as 17 houses sustained damages of varying degrees.

Plantations, including orchards and paddy fields, in and around the village, were also damaged. Public utilities like electric poles were uprooted cutting off power supply, while trees fell in several places blocking the main road linking the village with the nearest town in Assam.

The village of about 107 households is located around 12 kilometres from Longchem EAC Headquarters in Nagaland under which it falls and about 4 kilometres from the Assam-Nagaland border.

A villager told The Morung Express over phone that officials from the EAC Headquarters arrived at the village today to assess the damage.

Meanwhile, the villagers cleared the road (connecting Longchem with Naganijan, Assam) of debris during the day, including uprooted trees, making way for vehicular traffic. The road acts as a lifeline and a shorter route to Assam for many villages in the Japukong range as the only road connecting the range with important townships like Tuli and Mangkolemba in Nagaland has been neglected for decades.

There was also report of damage to plantations and uprooting of trees in nearby Aonokpuyimsen.
