Dimapur, June 26 (MExN): In a bid to ensure peace and order during the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, has imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) across the jurisdictions of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland. This measure, effective from 5:00 PM on June 25 until 7:00 PM on June 27 aims to curb potential disturbances during the elections.
Commissioner Sophie detailed the prohibitory orders, stating, “To maintain peace and tranquillity during the ULB elections, the assembly of five or more people in public places within the specified jurisdictions is prohibited, except within a 100-meter perimeter of the polling stations during polling hours.” He further added that movement between wards or from adjoining villages to municipal or town council jurisdictions on polling day is restricted, alongside public meetings, processions, and the display or propagation of election-related materials.
Additionally, carrying lethal weapons or inflammable objects in public places is banned, and the use of public address systems near polling stations is restricted to prevent public disturbance.
Violations of these orders will result in punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and the Nagaland Municipal Act of 2023.
In a parallel move, the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Peren, Vineet Kumar, IAS, has also invoked Section 144 CrPC from 5:00 PM on June 25 to 11:00 PM on June 26 to maintain peace during the elections in Peren district. This order restricts the assembly of five or more people and non-essential vehicular movement throughout the district.
Deputy Commissioner Kumar clarified, “Officials, security personnel, magistrates on duty, medical personnel, and those engaged in election duties are exempt from these restrictions. Essential services, commercial vehicles carrying goods or passengers, and vehicles for press and media, telecom services, and medical emergencies are also exempted.”
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that any violation of these orders will result in prosecution under the relevant sections of the law, noting that the notice is issued ex-parte as it cannot be served individually to all concerned.
These measures are aimed at ensuring the elections proceed smoothly without any disruptions or untoward incidents.
