Amid the global call for collective, transformative action to celebrate, protect and restore our planet, the Salangtem Ward Yimtem (Union), Mokokchung celebrated World Environment Day on Saturday, a day ahead of the international celebration on June 5 with various activities.

On Saturday, Salangtem Ward became the first in Mokokchung to launch a utility based Geospatial map in collaboration with Nagaland GIS and Remote Sensing Centre. The dedicatory and thanksgiving prayer at the launch was pronounced by Monglier, Associate Pastor, Mokokchung Town Baptist Arogo (MTBA).

Geospatial map will use GPS and help in locating land, houses, roads, ward lanes, trees and forests, river, culvert/bridge, garbage collection point, electric pole, PHED meter house, footpath, building distribution and important landmarks and places in the ward. Through Geospatial technology, measurement and analysis of road and area can be done.

“With the coming of technology, everything is done online. The Geospatial map will help people locate important places and landmarks in Salangtem ward at any time through online mode,” said Lanuakum, Chairman, Salangtem Ward Yimten.

Along with this, the Salangtem Ward Sanitation Committee also took measures to reduce kitchen waste by distributing brochures on how to make kitchen waste compost in simplified form in Ao and English languages. “The literature is distributed with the aim that at least 20% of kitchen waste will be reduced,” said Lanuakum. The committee also collected about 400 kgs of plastic waste from the ward and submitted to the Mokokchung Municipal Council.

Meanwhile, marking World Environment Day, the ward also planted and adopted around 300 orange trees. The trees were adopted by residents of the ward under the initiation of the Yimten, Salangtem Youth Union and Salangtem Youth Fellowship. The ward expects that at least 200 orange trees will bear fruit in the near future.
