Reporting Facts is ‘sacrosanct,’ Nagaland DGP tells journalist

Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma today stated that reporting facts is ‘sacrosanct,’ and advised the State journalists to endeavour to distinguish between facts and opinions.

Be honest, fearless and unbiased in your reportage, Sharma further urged the media fraternity gracing the one-day media workshop ‘Vartalap’ organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kohima under the Union Information & Broadcasting, here at Hotel Japfü.

Further citing the numerous press statements on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Sharma viewed that it would be too premature and unfair to comment on the issue unless ‘we’ know the contents.

To this end, he appealed the people of the State to trust the government, whom he opined ‘will take the correct step on this issue.’

Describing the fourth estate as the ‘mirror of the society,’ K Elu Ndang, General Secretary, Naga Hoho as the guest of honour cautioned that in the present time, with more influence, media has the power either to build or destabilise any society or government.

Hence, he reminded the media personnel of their responsibility to build a society towards a progressive state.

Taking advantage of the platform, Ndang also opined if only the Naga political issue could have been resolved and celebrated along with the ‘9 Years Seva, Sushana & Garib Kalyan’ today as settlement still continues to elude the Naga people.

He also stated the UCC may not necessarily be appropriate for the tribal people, and appealed the Government of India to reconsider its decision to implement the same in the country.

Meanwhile he also expressed disheartenment on the Manipur issue, which he said has gone ‘beyond human imagination’ with no life.

He appealed the GoI to come forward and address the grievances of the people and bring back peace and harmony in the state of Manipur at the earliest.
