DIMAPUR/MON/KIPHIRE, DEC 17 (NPN): ‘Mass peaceful public’ rallies were held across five district headquarters of Eastern Nagaland on Thursday where thousands took to the streets in protest against the brutal killing of 14 innocent civilians and injuring of several others by security forces on December 4 and 5.
Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) said that the rally was successful and held without untoward incidents.
As part of the protest, a total bandh was observed in Mon district from 6 a.m. till 4 p.m., where hundreds of people from different walks of life took out a rally from private station to DC’s office in Mon town. They were seen carrying placards and banners. Konyak Union had earlier said that the December 16 public rally across Mon district would be the first phase of agitation against the tyranny of the Indian armed forces.
After reaching DC’s office, KU submitted a reminder memorandum to President of India in pursuance of its earlier memorandum, through Nagaland governor.
In the memorandum, KU asserted that Konyaks would not tolerate the incident being termed as “mistaken identity”.
It alleged that the incident was a deliberate attempt to take innocent lives, which has been proven by concrete evidence available in the public domain.
KU also reminded that all civil society organisations (CSOs) have set a 30-day deadline to fulfil the charters of demands. These include identification of all army personnel involved in the incident and book and punish them under civil laws, set up independent probe under competent investigating agency immediately, putting in public domain within 30 days the action taken and immediate removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the Northeast.
The memorandum warned that if justice was not delivered within the stipulated time frame, the Konyak CSOs would have no option left but to initiate further steps till Government of India justified its action.
Simultaneous rallies were held in Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire and Noklak districts where people sought immediate justice for the victims and at the same time demanded action against those involved in the massacre.
The people of the five districts also demanded immediate repeal of AFSPA.
At Kiphire, the rally was organised under the banner of United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji (USLP) at Deluxe Point.
Speaking on the occasion, USLP general secretary P Achumse Sangtam highlighted the resolution adopted by ENPO members at Longleng.
Akehta Sangtamlarü Thsingmujang (AST) president Apila, United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji (USSC) vice president Sethrongba Yingphidongre; Kiphire town head GB Thronglise Sangtam; Tikhir Tribal Council general secretary W Philip Tothong; Zikemong Sangtam and Phutoi vice president on behalf of public and Eastern Sumi Hoho respectively addressed the gathering.
At Shamator, Yimkhiung Tribal Council organised a mass public rally at public ground Shamator, followed by mass rally around Shamator Town after which a representation was submitted to ADC Shamator.
ENPO secretary Yansomong Yimkhiung delivered the key note address while short speeches were given by representatives of YTC, YAA and YGBA.
At Tobu, a brief programme was held, which was chaired by TTSU president. Short speeches were delivered on the occasion by former KU (B) Tobu president SB Poangba and general secretary Tobu Area Students’ Union Ngaupu A Konyak.
