Pork, a beloved dish among the Nagas, is now pricier in Dimapur as the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has revised the prices of wholesale and retail pork, witnessing increases of over 18% and 16%, respectively.

The price revision was made during a coordination meeting on February 22, addressing a representation submitted by the Pork Wholesalers of Dimapur requesting reviewing of the existing rates.

According to the “Meeting Minutes” of the coordination meeting, signed by the DMC Administrator, the wholesale rate of pork was revised from Rs 215 to Rs 255 per kg, reflecting a substantial 18.6% hike.

Similarly, the price of dressed pork saw an increase from the existing Rs 300 to Rs 350 per kg, marking a hike of over 16%.
The rate of Offal (head, hoof, intestine, etc) also experienced an upward revision by over 15%, rising from Rs 260 to Rs 300 per kilogram.

It said that the revisions were made after thorough deliberation, including a comparative study of rates from neighbouring states submitted by a sub-committee, and considering the grievances shared by the Pork Butcher Union, Dimapur, and Pork Wholesaler, Dimapur.

In addition to the price revision, the meeting decided to mandate the compulsory use of digital weighing scales in every pork butcher shop.

Shops operating without a Trade License were also directed to obtain a temporary permit from the concerned authority and those failing to comply would not be allowed to conduct business.

Furthermore, every shop was directed to prominently display the rate chart, the DMC said.

This is the third prices adjustment in less than a year. The prices were revised on May as well as June 2023.

With this, the cost of this favoured food item for the local residents has become even more burdensome within a short period.
