BJP YET TO REAFFIRM ITS PRESENT POSITION ON ALL PARTY RESOLUTION

Correspondent KOHIMA, AUG 29 (NPN) : After some senior BJP workers issued a stinging statement against the proposed all-party government under Nagaland United Government (NUG), this had both NPF and NDPP scurrying to hold respective meetings to reaffirm the resolution, in an effort at damage control.

BJP has not said anything over the discordant note from its senior party workers nor has the party legislature convened a meeting to discuss the matter.

As reported earlier by Nagaland Post, the NPF and the ruling NDPP at their respective meetings held here Saturday, reaffirmed the joint resolution adopted by all political parties (NDPP, BJP, Ind and NPF) for a ‘Nagaland United Government’. A day earlier, NPF legislature party reaffirmed its commitment for the NUG at a meeting held in Dimapur at the residence of its leader T.R. Zeliang.

On Saturday, a consultative meeting comprising the Core Committee, elected members, central office bearers, division presidents and central frontals and cells heads was held at NPF central office Kohima, during which the house also adopted a three-point resolution. (See resolution on p-7)

Later, interacting with media after the meeting, NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, said since the party MLAs had agreed to be part of an all-party government specifically for the Naga political issue, they have been advised not to seek or accept any office even if offered. Dr. Liezietsu said the consultative meeting discussed the reason for all MLAs coming together and so when NPF legislators also agreed to join the government for political reasons, the party will not come in the way but rather, endorse it as it was for political reason.

Dr. Liezietsu said the issue was very clear that joining the government was for Naga political issue and therefore, he advised party MLAs not to ask nor accept any office even if offered.

He said the coming together under the NUG of all legislators, was to exert pressure on the negotiating groups and the government of India. He also made it clear that political solution may not be guaranteed since political parties were not stakeholders nor involved in the talks but only acting as facilitators. He however expressed optimism that all the legislators under NUG will act as a strong pressure group for political solution.

On BJP leaders reacting to his statement, Dr. Liezietsu said the party had hurled false allegations against him which was not proper. On what would happen to the NUG proposal if BJP eventually backed out, he said BJP legislators signed the deal for NUG along with NDPP and NPF legislators but it was up to the party.

Leader of Opposition T.R. Zeliang reiterated that the NPF elected members will stand by their decision to not set any pre-condition for joining the all-party government. Zeliang said since all party MLAs including those of BJP signed the resolution to form opposition-less government under the nomenclature Nagaland United Government (NUG), members do not have any issue. However for BJP, the ball was in its court he added.

He also reiterated that NPF MLAs will not back out as the party and members stood committed to Naga political issue and that NPF has not issue with any party.

NDPP endorses: Meanwhile, NDPP held a joint consultative meeting among its senior party leadership led by party president Chingwang Konyak and party legislators at State Banquet Hall on Saturday. According to NDPP media and communication committee, the meeting deliberated on several issues pertaining to the state.

NDPP M&CC said the chief minister highlighted the plethora of ideas and avenues for the growth of NDPP. The chief minister also explained in detail about the present political situation and “the ongoing peace talks between the government of India and the Naga national political groups”. The meeting reiterated its endorsement of the resolution passed on July 20 at Dimapur and also welcomed and supported the August 13,2021 joint resolution of NDPP, BJP and NPF (for an all-party government).
