NIMSR to get 100 MBBS seats for 2023-24

The ‘Letter of Intent’ (LoP) for approval of 100 MBBS seats for the academic year 2023-24 was received for the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) Kohima on April 18. The letter was received from the National Medical Commission, Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB). 

 

 

 

Announcing this at a press conference held at the conference hall of NIMSR, Minister for Health, Paiwang Konyak said it is a historic day for the people of the state to start a Medical College after 60 years of statehood.

He informed that the acceptance letter will be sent within a week to enable the Medical Assessment and Rating Board to issue Letter of Permission (LoP) for 100 MBBS seats for the academic session 2023-24. “Getting LoI/LoP from NMC is not the end but just the beginning to start the Medical College,” said Konyak and sought the cooperation and support from all sections.

He assured that all required infrastructures will be ready by May 31, 2023 and the academic session will start by June or July. Konyak said the civil works for the students who will be joining the 100 MBBS seats have been completed.

Meanwhile, he thanked Chief Minister, Neiphiu for his concerns and efforts; Commissioner & Secretary, Y Kikheto Sema; Dr Soumya Chakraborty, Director NIMSR and team; PDs; engineering wing and all contractors for their cooperation. 

However, the Minister requested all the contractors to complete the entire work at the complex within the stipulated time, and other works within June 30 as per the agreements.

Manpower on track 
Sema informed that manpower for the Medical College is on track, informing of the interview conducted for selecting the faculty. Among the 19 faculty members selected in the first phase of interview, it was informed that 17 have sent their letter of consent, while two more are awaited.

12 from the second phase have also sent their letter of consent and one is awaited, while the results of the third phase interview will be declared within the next few days.

“We are getting the best of the best throughout the length and breadth of the state,” said Sema. With the LoI, he informed that advertisement for second grade employees will be notified as per the NMC norms, while for the third grade and other employees, a committee is working on the same and will be putting it up for Cabinet approval.

‘We have the best resources’
Prof Dr Soumya Chakraborty, Director cum Dean of NIMSR informed that out of the approved 100 MBBS seats, 15 will be all India seats and 85 for the state of Nagaland. However, in any case if the all India seats remain vacant, those will also come under the state seats.

When queried about the transparency of the interview process, she said there was no conflict of interest and confidentiality was maintained in the entire process. Dr Chakraborty said the screening was done by a reputed university recruitment cell, who are not from Nagaland.  Following the shortlisting, interview was conducted with experts from AIIMS and experts from reputed institutions from outside the state.

On the selected faculty from the state, she described them as “the best in the lot.” “We have expertise in our state who didn’t get the opportunity to be in a teaching centre,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Dr Chakraborty assured “we have gone for the best not only for human resources, but equipments and other resources too.”

Describing NIMSR as her “embryological baby,” Dr Chakraborty said that though the Medical College is located in Kohima, it is an asset for the whole of India.
