Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, SEP 6 (NPN) : Nearly a year after deciding to revive the cease fire with the government of India– which it had unitarily abrogated in 2015, the Nikki-led NSCN (K) is set to sign the formal ceasefire agreement with the Government of India by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that a delegation of the Nikki-led NSCN (K) group will be leaving for Delhi on Monday, where they will be meeting Home ministry officials to sign the ceasefire agreement.
It was also learnt that the Cease-Fire Monitoring Group chairman, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Amarjeet Singh Bedi is also likely to be present during the signing of the ceasefire.
It may be mentioned that ‘lt. gen.’ (retd) Nikki Sumi on December 23, 2020 announced that his group, in order to facilitate the peace process, decided to revive the cease fire with the government of India.
In his statement issued in December, 2020 Nikki said the faction had been striving for years to achieve an honourable and acceptable political solution to the Naga issue. He said NSCN/GPRN was also conscious of the overwhelming sentiments among Nagas for an early solution to the protracted issue. “We expect Government of India to respond positively by honouring our decision as a confidence building measure in the larger interests of peace in Nagaland and Naga people in general,” the statement read.
Interacting with a group of people including some media persons on the outskirts of Dimapur in January this year, Nikki asserted that his group will take into confidence the wishes and desire of the Naga people for achieving an honorable and acceptable solution to the decades-old Naga political issue.
He further stressed that unity among the Nagas was paramount for any kind of lasting solution that would be acceptable to all. “If all the groups cannot come and sit together and the public representatives cannot bear witness, there is no point in having dialogue,” he said.
Nikki maintained that the decision to join the peace talks or to revive the ceasefire was to fulfil the wishes and aspirations of the Nagas- to give peace a chance and not with the expectation that the Government of India withdraw the cases against him. Nikki said his only wish was that Nagas unite.
While indicating that the group led by him will remain as a separate entity like that of the NSCN (I-M) and WC, NNPGs- in the peace talks with the Government of India, Nikki said that there may be differences among various groups, but unless all three– NSCN (I-M), WC NNPGs and NSCN (K)- sit together, there cannot be any head way.
