A new political party calling itself the North East Democratic Front (NEDF) entered the electoral race in Nagaland. The party declared its electoral ambition at a programme, which also served also the formal launch of the NEDF, today in Dimapur.

The party however would only set up or back independent candidates pending the recognition of the NEDF by the election Commission. NEDF President, Lima Longkumer, informed that the registration was in process.  In the meantime, the party  would  be “setting up candidates as independent candidates” under the NEDF banner, he added. According to him, the party has no pre-poll arrangement with any other party, but would opt for post-poll alliance, if its candidates win.

A former NPP worker, Longkumer said that the people have heard enough of false promises and it was time to gain the people’s trust by maintaining consistency in principles. Under the NEDF’s motto: Power to the people, he said, “We need a crusade for a new age politics to give new opportunities and hope… Don’t waste your vote. Vote for the things you believe in.”

The party’s spokesperson, Bendangtoshi Ozukum described the NEDF as a party that will back independent candidates. While stating that they are intent setting up candidates in Nagaland and Meghalaya, he said, “There are many independents, who want to contest in the coming elections. However, they are not getting the proper platform.” The NEDF, he said, seeks to serve as the launch pad for such candidates and that the party will be addressing a press conference soon, alongwith its poll candidates.

The programme today had two NEDF hopefuls in the Meghalaya polls— Batskhem Malbaniang from 25th Mawsinrem AC and Cores Marwein from 9 Nongpoh AC. Other party representatives present were Avinash Ronghang and Rajan Timung from Karbi Anglong, Assam.
