NCP MLA, S Toiho Yeptho was elected “unopposed” as the Deputy Speaker of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Yeptho, who represents the 33 Suruhoto seat, was elected to the position at the 4th Session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, which began on February 26.

Yeptho’s name to the deputy chair was proposed by the Minister of Women Resource Development & Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse and seconded by NCP MLA, P Longon.

Congratulating the newly elected Deputy Speaker, Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio recalled Yeptho’s extensive experience in public service, although a first timer in the House. Rio mentioned Yeptho’s past leadership roles as a student activist, and in later years, going on to serve in various capacities as the chairman of Chekiye Village Council, General Secretary of Chümoukedima Area Village Council Association and Advisor of Dimapur District Village Council.

Yeptho was described as not only good in handling public affairs, but also adept at business and farming.

“The very fact that he has been elected to this august House unanimously is an indication of the confidence the house reposes on him,” said the Chief Minister.

He expressed confidence in Yeptho’s ability and that he will have no problem in efficiently carrying out his mandated role under the guidance of the Speaker.

Acknowledging his election, Yeptho said he was humbled at the same time. “In all humility, I humbly accept the constitutional chair of Deputy Speaker as per the verdict of this august house,” said Yeptho.

While he admitted he was new to Parliamentary practices and conventions, he asserted that he will learn and perform his duties to the best of his abilities, while upholding the decorum, integrity and the rich traditions of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
