Nagaland ULB polls: 11 candidates formally get winning certificates

A total of 11 candidates were formally issued winning certificates for being elected ‘unopposed and uncontested’ in the upcoming elections to urban local bodies (ULBs) in Nagaland slated for June 26. 

Out of these 11, seven were candidates from the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), two from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and one independent candidate.

According to the State DIPR, five candidates received Certificates of Election for the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) on Tuesday from Returning Officer Lanusenla Longkumer at the KMC office. 

These candidates were the sole contestants in their respective wards: Kelhousenuo Khruomo (NDPP) for Ward No. 1 – High School; Avilie Rio (NDPP) for Ward No. 2 – Bayavu; Thejavizo Philip Solo (NDPP) for Ward No. 8 – New Market; Neibodzelie Solo (NDPP) for Ward No. 11 – PWD; and Ketousie Khamo (NDPP) for Ward No. 15 – AG. Anthony Ngullie, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland and Election Observer for KMC, also attended the certificate handover.

Meanwhile, in Wokha, four candidates were declared unopposed for the Wokha Town Council (WTC) and received their winning certificates from Returning Officer & Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Wokha, K Furhesie Nyuwi on June 18. 

The unopposed candidates were Renthunglo Kikon (NDPP) for Ward No. 1 (Reserved), Lily T Humtsoe (NCP) for Ward No. 4 (Reserved), Nzano Kikon (BJP) for Ward No. 13 (Reserved), and Rukhumo Kikon (BJP) for Ward No. 14.

With four wards declared unopposed out of 15 under WTC, the remaining 11 wards will see competition among 27 candidates, including two women in the general category.
In Mangkolemba, ADC and Returning Officer T Lankonsen Tsanglao presented the election certificate to A Meren Walling, an independent candidate who won uncontested from Luyong ward in Mangkolemba town.

In Zunheboto, ADC and RO ULB elections Keyirangding Hegui administered official formalities and declared Niukali K Assumi (NDPP) as the uncontested candidate to fill the office of Zunheboto Town Council from Ward No. 4, Old Town Colony, which is under a reserved category.

Meanwhile, in a press release, the NDPP informed that three of its party candidates have secured seats in the upcoming ULB Election unopposed under Aghunato Town Council. These candidates are Juvitoli Katty for Ward No. 4 (Reserved), Hoka for Ward No. 8, and Nitokhu T Yeptho for Ward No. 9. The party expressed confidence in securing all six remaining seats it will contest. 

It was also learnt that all the NDPP candidates from 9 wards Chiephobozou Town Council were elected unopposed as the independent candidates withdrew their nomination to contest.

The BJP Nagaland also updated X social media on Tuesday, that its party candidate V Samuel Holo of Ward 2 under Niuland Town Council (NTC) on was elected unopposed.
