Fire & Emergency Services new directorate building inaugurated

The new Directorate office building of Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services was formally inaugurated today by Pohwang Konyak, Advisor Fire & Emergency Services, SIRD and Relief & Rehabilitation, Nagaland. It is located at New Capital Complex, below NBCC Convention Centre, Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion, Pohwang said that the Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services was earlier under the Police department. However, due to technical profession the Nagaland Fire and Emergency services was bifurcated from Police to form a separate Directorate in 1990 with seven fire stations.
For quite many years, he said the department of Fire and Emergency Services did not have a proper Directorate Building. Commenting on having new directorate building, he said “This is a historic and great achievement for the department to have a permanent directorate with modern facilities. This is a historic because the dream to have a permanent directorate is fulfilled after 30 years.”
As per National Standard, Nagaland should have 48 Fire Station but till 2010 Nagaland has only eight Fire Stations, the Advisor said. From 2011 to 2022, the department has constructed 10 fire stations.
At present, there are 18 Fire Stations including Central Workshop-cum-Garage and Directorate building. And within this year, the department will be inaugurating another three fire stations, the Advisor said.
Moreover, the department has been pursuing for one training institute for the last 11 years and hope it will be materialized soon, the advisor added.
Also speaking on the occasion, Nagaland Urban Development Advisor, Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire extended best wishes to the department and urged them to carry forward their best performance in the best interest of the people.
I Meyionen, Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) Nagaland hoped that through this new directorate building, the employees of the directorate would work with new zeal and commitment for the interest of the people.
Touching on building by-laws, he said that once it is fully operational, the people would approach the department for issue of fire safety measures.
In this, he said that fire & emergency services has a greater role to play.
About directorate building project
Neilasa Sopfü, Inspector General of Fire & Emergency Services, Nagaland said that realizing the importance of Fire & Emergency Services, the government has started activating and initiating various fire and emergency services in term of prevention and control measures since 2010.
As the department keep on expanding its activities and services, the government felt the need to have proper directorate building for which an area measuring 4.3 acre has been allotted to the department in 2013.
The directorate building was designed by the Office of the Superintending Engineer, Police Engineering Project, Kohima as a 3–Storied building with a total Project Cost of Rs.1085.90 lakhs.
The project cost is inclusive of civil works of the building, its ancillary works, site protection. The Project was funded under negotiated loan with HUDCO as its funding Agency.
Construction of this directorate building was allotted to M/S P. Suohu, a Class-I Registered Contractor and the was works started on 16th June 2016 and has been completed in all respect under the active supervision of the SE (PEP) and his officers along with the Technical Officers of the Department of Fire & Emergency Services.
The programme was followed by demonstration on fire safety measures led by Kenny Khing, Inspector of Fire & Emergency Services, Nagaland.
