Nagaland: School education to be modified with new pedagogical, curricular restructuring under NEP

Coordinator for Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC), L Khel, Kohima, Vizoneilie Pienyü has said that the New Education Policy (NEP) is aimed at promoting better overall learning, development, and well-being of children with a strong base of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) from age 3.

He was speaking at the science exhibition organized at Government Middle School for Children with Special Needs, Lerie, Kohima.

He said under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, 10+2 structure in school education will be modified with a new pedagogical and curricular restructuring of 5+3+3+4 to cover the ages between 3-18 which would be 5 years at Foundational Stage including 3 years Pre-School (Age 3-6) and 2 years Class 1 & 2 (Age 6-8). Apart from that there would be 3 Years Preparatory Stage– Class 3 to 5 (Age 8-11), 3 Years Middle Stage- Class 6 to 8 (Age 11-14) and 4 years Secondary Stage – Class 9 to 12 (Age 14-18).

The speaker noted that currently, children in the age group of 3-6 are not being covered in the 10+2 structure as Class 1 begins at age 6.

Highlighting about government schools under EBRC, L. Khel, he informed that there were 12 government primary schools with 722 students and 119 teachers with Pupil-Teacher ratio 6:1. Additionally, there were 19 middle schools, with total 2891 students and 361 teachers with pupil- teacher ratio at 8:1. Out of 4 High Schools and 3 Higher Secondary schools, there are 3483 students and 324 teachers with a Pupil-Teacher ratio of 10:1. Overall, the Pupil-Teacher ratio was 9:1.

Pienyü said there were 4 Primary schools and Middle schools that have less than 5:1 ratio, observing that the National Pupil-teacher ratio is 30:1 and the new NEP 2020 ratio is set to be 25:1.

Speaking of the Science Exhibition, the speaker underscored the crucial importance of science education which is necessary to foster critical thinking, problem-solving and helps us understand the world around us.

Pienyü said holding such exhibition, enables to celebrate the creativity, curiosity and ingenuity of young talented students’ scientists. “As we witness the exhibition today, let us remember that science is all around us. It’s in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the technology we use.”

The speaker urged students to ask questions, continue exploring and seek answers and pursue passions in learning.

Krovielhouoe Koza gave an introduction of the Science Exhibition day. During the daylong programme, the exhibition was also attended by GMS AAradura and GPS Tsiepfutsiepfe, Kohima. 17 models were demonstrated by students during the exhibition.
