•    Model Code of Conduct comes into immediate effect: CEO
•    Convenes meeting of recognized political parties on March 18

DIMAPUR, MARCH 17 (MExN): The Lok Sabha election in Nagaland will be conducted on April 19, during the first phase of the General Election 2024, the Election Commission of India announced on Saturday. 

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections at a press conference in New Delhi. He said the polls will be held in 7 phases, beginning from April 19 and ending on June 1. The results will be declared on June 4. No simultaneous polls will be held.

In the first phase, a total of 102 Parliamentary Constituencies from 21 states, including Nagaland’s lone seat will go for voting. The date of counting will be the same across the country, which is June 4. 

For Nagaland, the date of issue of Gazette notification is on March 20, last date of making nomination on March 27, date of scrutiny of nomination on March 28 and last date for withdrawal of candidates on March 30. 

Three names have so far been declared to contest in the lone Lok Sabha seat from Nagaland. They include Dr Chumben Murry from the NDPP, Supongmeren Jamir from the Congress and Hayithung Bill as an Independent.  

Consequent to the announcement of the schedule for the General Election to the Lok Sabha 2024, the Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland informed that the Model Code of Conduct comes into immediate effect and will be in force till the completion of the Elections. The Model Code of Conduct will be applicable to all the political parties and to the Union and State Government and UT Administrations, the press release issued by CEO Vyasan R informed. 

A Screening Committee to examine the proposals related to Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has also been constituted. The Committee shall be chaired by the Chief Secretary and shall have the Principal Secretary, Department of Home as Member-Secretary and Administrative Head of Department submitting MCC proposal as Member.

Meanwhile the CEO convened a meeting with all recognized political parties on March 18 at 2 PM in his office chamber in Kohima. In a meeting notice, all the political parties have been requested to depute at least two (2) representatives to attend the meeting.
