Nagaland got its first Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) oxygen generation plant at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima on May 17. The plant was inaugurated by Minister of Health and Family Welfare, S Pangyu Phom.
Describing the day as significant for the people of the State, Phom said the PSA plant separates oxygen from the normal compressed air and can produce round the clock uninterrupted supply of oxygen.
As Nagaland battles the increase in COVID-19 cases, he said the plant will help ease the oxygen demands of the hospital, which will be supplied straight to the site of use through the medical gas pipeline.
The Minister informed that the PSA plant at NHAK has a capacity of 300 Liters per Minute (LPM).
He further informed that after the completion of the installation and commissioning of the work, the gas sample was sent to Fare Labs, Gurgaon. The test sample derived a purity of 95.37%, which he said conforms to the standard quality and is declared fit to use for medical purposes.
Phom also stated that installation and commissioning of a similar plant at District Hospital Dimapur is completed and sample test result is awaited while installation and commissioning work at IMDH Mokokchung is in process.
Infrastructure works for similar plants at Tuensang, Phek, Longleng, Mon, Zunheboto, Wokha, Peren and Kiphire have been initiated, the Minister added. He further stated that a proposed PSA plant at Noklak is also expected.
It was informed that two additional 1,000 LPM capacity PSA plants for NHAK and CIHSR Dimapur has been proposed to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to augment the surge of COVID positive cases in the state.
“With the PSA plant in all the district hospitals, oxygen concentrators and oxygen cylinders distributed to all districts, the requirement of the oxygen to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic should be comfortable,” the Minister said optimistically.
He also thanked the MoHFW, UNDP and UNICEF for their generous contributions.
