Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) President, S Supongmeren Jamir revealed that the party has screened 7 potential candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, scheduled to take place between April to May.  “Our search committee has screened out seven of the candidates and the names have been submitted to the national screening committee,” he said. This will be followed by an official announcement from the party on March 7 on who their consensus candidate will be for the lone Lok Sabha seat.

Speaking on the sidelines of the leadership training camp of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Seva Dal at Hokhezhe village, Niuland on March 5, the NPCC President confirmed the party’s intention to contest for the Parliamentary election.
In repose to queries on the possibility of forming alliances with other political parties, Jamir mentioned that partnership with the I.N.D.I.A block has always remained open if the requirement arises, including with the Rising Peoples Party and Naga Peoples Front as well.

“Definitely we will be together,” he said. The NPCC has had several setbacks over the years with the party unable to win Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat for the last 20 years and showing consecutive nil results in the last two State Assembly Elections.

Jamir on the other hand saw these setbacks from a different perspective, by stating the last 20 years has seen the internal destruction of the state and society.

“We can see the evil designs of the RSS which is carried over by the BJP party. Now the regional NDPP have joined them,” he alleged. “We thought at least they will try to defend the interests of the Naga people. But we know now that they are already under the dictates of their national high command, the RSS which is directly binding them,” he said.

Moreover as the state is without an opposition, he claimed that it has resulted in the inability of the elected representatives to voice out the concerns of the people they are responsible to.

The reasonable citizens are realising and understanding the situation we are heading towards, he observed. This includes the recurring unemployment problem, non-payment of salaries and church, NGO activities being sabotaged by the government.

Our national workers also, we have two agreements; those two agreements have not been coming forward. The state government is also unable to push and get a resolve on the issue. The BJP is attempting to divide the Naga people. So while expecting the solution, solution is pushing far from us, he commented.

Earlier in the programme, speeches were delivered by Chandan Barua, Secretary Northeast in-charge, All India Congress Seva Dal, Kutoho Chishi, DCC President Dimapur, former NPCC President, K Therie and Nagavito Sumi, PCC member and former candidate from Ghaspani-I A/C.

The three-day leadership training camp of the state Seva Dal is being held for the first time in the state with the aim to strengthening the party’s position at the grassroots. Therie mentioned that Congress is the only party that can reform the morality of Nagaland. As such he urged the party workers to be strong in their own respective corners.

Supongmeren Jamir, meanwhile, regarded the Seva Dal as the backbone of the party lauded the great steps taken to push its members into the state.
