Nagaland BJP headed for party presidential election

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) over three months long state-wide membership drive and elections to organisational posts in Nagaland is all set to come to a close. The party’s state unit General Secretary Manai Konyak told a press conference in Dimapur on January 4 that elections for the mandal (Assembly Constituency) presidents concluded recently. The process will culminate with the election of the state unit President, tentatively scheduled on January 9 or 10. 

Out of the 60 mandal units, the process of election to 53 units has been concluded. Elections to three unnamed mandal units have been kept in abeyance, while four mandals will be helmed on ad-hoc basis. The reasons however were not disclosed. 
Nominations for the posts of 14 district presidents will begin on January 6 and the results announced the next day. The party has received 42 applications for the posts of 14 district presidents.  

According to Konyak, the party’s central leadership has reportedly advised against direct elections for organisational posts, wherever possible. As per the party’s election guidelines, election of the state unit president involves voting by 60 council members, 33 cluster in-charges, two MLAs, one MP and 14 district presidents. 

The culmination of the elections for the district presidents will be followed by the election for the state President’s post. He said that the list of candidates for the state president’s post has yet to be notified by the party leadership. 

Other sources however informed that the race to the party president’s post is getting hot with a senior party loyalist, Vice President Hurui Zeliang contending for the post. Benjamin Yepthomi is the incumbent president.
