A mudslide near the CRPF camp in Lerie Colony, Kohima, caused major traffic disruption on National Highway 2 on Sunday morning after a heavy-duty truck heading to Manipur was stranded.

Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant informed The Morung Express that the blockade was cleared around 11 am.
The stranded truck also halted other trucks and vehicles on the highway for several hours.

Ramnikant noted that the upkeep of the NH between the Kohima and Mao stretch is maintained by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

He said the mudslide has been occurring for the past week, and an excavator has been clearing the debris regularly.

“This morning, we received information that a truck got stuck in the lane,” he said, adding that it was a lorry truck. The load had to be unloaded, and the truck was moved out, after which the highway was opened.

Given the recurring mudslides on this stretch, especially during the monsoon season, the DC informed that the issue was highlighted during a Project Management Unit (PMU) meeting held this month.

The NHIDCL assured to take measures to address the issue. However, due to incessant rains, the situation remains challenging to contain, he added. .
