‘Mockery of Democracy’: Viral videos of ‘throwing money’ after ULBs polls win sparks outrage

Viral video clips of “throwing money” down on voters, purportedly as part of celebrating a win in the recent urban local bodies (ULBs) elections in Nagaland, have sparked outrage as a “mockery of democracy,” with social media users terming the act as “despicable,” “disgraceful,” “degradation,” “shameful,” and “abuse of money.”

In the video clip circulating on social media, a crowd of people can be seen collecting money as rupee notes ‘rained’ down on them from a balcony above.

In another video, two persons are seen ‘throwing money’ from a vehicle. In a press release, the Rising People’s Party (RPP) claimed that these “ugly celebrations” were allegedly conducted by NDPP party workers from Wards 10 and 20 in Dimapur. However, this information could not be independently verified by this newspaper.

“The present sinful display of throwing money, as per videos circulated on social media, is nothing short of the time of Noah or of Sodom and Gomorrah,” opined Richard Belho, Bamboo Architect & Founder of Zynorique Initiatives.

“Nagas are manifesting wickedness and disregard for our future,” he underscored, while further asserting that “electing a leader, in reality, should be preceded by prayers and fasting.”

“To make a mockery of this process is only going to put a curse on future generations,” he affirmed.

Belho further stressed that human beings must learn that all their “wisdom and power is useless and Jehovah is not a lenient God” and cautioned: “To the worshippers of Horus and Baal, get ready for the worst.”

In the meantime, he urged that the faithful must continue to pray for God’s divine mercy even while pointing out that “the unborn generation does not deserve such a future.”

On the other hand, a social media user who did not wish to be named underlined that the act of throwing money is “totally contradicting to our Christian values.” Asserting that it is not relevant to our culture, he added: “They may have won the election today and feel like they have everything, but we don’t know what tomorrow holds.”

“There may come a day when you don’t even have a single penny or food to eat,” he illustrated, citing instances of former politicians who went into debt after losing an election and were forced to sell their land, buildings, or properties. “Distributing cash publicly is an abuse of money,” he further underscored while reiterating that such action is totally against the culture of the Nagas. He also recalled that in Naga history, there were couples who performed the ‘Feast of Merit’ up to five times, wherein villagers were fed for consecutive days. Although uneducated in those days, he said that, being rich, they knew how to share what they had with their loved ones and the needy. “There are far better ways to celebrate a victory,” he underscored.

“The sad irony is that the majority of the youths who actually hold the key to the future are drawn towards money,” commented Mhabemo John Paul Lotha. For one-time monetary gain, they are throwing away their future, he contended. “Today, it is the youth who are suffering the most starting from their education (read Government Schools) to quality government colleges, to scholarships, to job opportunities,” he added. Stating that today’s youths have become so complacent, he lamented that “they do not think about the repercussions that follow whatsoever.”

“This is the reason why we have lots of Nagas getting caught in the quagmire of scams and other illegal activities in metro cities as well as in Nagaland itself,” he added.
