The Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma was in Nagaland on March 25. Sangma’s visit coincided with the PDA coalition launching its Lok Sabha election campaign in Sovima village, Chümoukedima.
During the short visit, he met the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in Sovima and the NPP’s Nagaland unit. Later addressing a press conference in Dimapur, he said that in consensus with the Nagaland NPP legislators and party leaders, he conveyed to Rio the NPP’s decision to endorse the candidature of the NDPP nominee and PDA’s consensus candidate for the Nagaland Parliamentary seat, Dr Chumben Murry.
As a partner of the NDA at the Centre, he said, “We have decided to endorse the candidature in true team spirit of the NDA. NDA partners have expressed similar support to the different political parties of the NDA which has sponsored candidates in different parts of the northeast.”
He added that in Meghalaya, the NDA is supporting the candidature of the NPP, while in Arunachal Pradesh, the NDA partners are supporting the candidature of the BJP.
In Manipur’s Outer Manipur Parliamentary seat, he informed that the NPP MLAs and party have extended support to the NPF candidate. According to him, the NPF leadership met him, today, seeking the NPP’s support.
Replying to a media query, he said that he also urged the Nagaland CM to consider the prospect of handing “responsibilities” to the five NPP MLAs.
In the 2018 Assembly elections, the NPP had won two seats only for the two to shift loyalty to the ruling NDPP. On the chances of such a loyalty shift recurring, he said, “Politics is always uncertain, there are many dynamics. Many Political leaders will look at the situation and make their decisions and that has been the nature of politics in the region and even in the national level. We should not say that it will not happen again.” This time, however, he said that the team will move forward unbroken.
