Under the Placemaking Marathon round-2 as a part of Azadika Amrit Mahotsav, Kohima Smart City along with Kohima Traffic Police worked on the improvement of two major junctions PHQ & TCP Junction in Kohima.

Both the junctions were first analysed by Smart City officials who recorded the existing traffic movement, pedestrian movement, and user behaviours during different times of the day, according to Annual Administrative Report 2022 of Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL).

The report stated that the existing issues of a site like un-organized parking, uneven footpaths, informal vendor encroachments, on-street parking, random pick and drop-off points, absence of dedicated pedestrian crossings, and absence of stop lines were recorded.

The proposed design transformed the residual spaces into safe pedestrian islands.

Dedicated pedestrian crossings were painted with continuous connectivity to the footpath. Dedicated pick-up and drop-off points for private vehicles and taxis were demarcated.

The bus stop was shifted away from the junction to reduce congestion.

Traffic calming measures were used to slow down traffic at the junction.

“This was a tactical trial that was implemented using temporary water-based paints to monitor and evaluate the behaviors of users, feasibility, and adaptability to the change,” the report stated.

The tactical trial was a success and now the smart city plans for permanent implementation, the report added.
