A cultural mini museum was inaugurated during the 59th Teipo of the Anatongre Students Union at Anatongre village in Kiphire district, held from January 5 to 7.
Special guest Joseph Thongliu, NPS, Deputy Commandant, 10th IR Kohima, Nagaland inaugurated the museum following which all the village folks and students witnessed the intriguing displays of cultural artefacts. The cultural museum— Powji Lokok Mükhip Rüh, means ‘A place where ancient traditional objects are preserved,’ in the Tikhir language.
During the event which was held under the theme ‘Embracing our cultural identity,’ Thongliu advised the congregation especially students of Anatongre village to preserve and promote their rich cultural identity.
He emphasised that knowing one’s root is an essential part of life, as without it, one can never be their true self or be called an ‘educated person.’ Culture is all the ways of life including art, belief and institution. Through culture one is governed by norms and customs, Thongliu said.
He also encouraged the student community to invite friends and families to their festivals, greet them with warm hospitality; thereby letting them know and experience their rich cultural heritage.
Further, the special guest likened a person who does not know his (culture/ roots) to a fallen leaf which does not know its destination and instead goes wherever the wind blows.
Most millennials are settled in towns and cities across Nagaland and beyond for better education but in the midst of pursuing the quest for success, one should ask if he/she is forgetting one’s own identity (culture), he said while encouraging students and young people to make time to visit their native villages, spend time with elders, and learn about one’s own culture as well as language which according to him, is critically important.
Wherever one maybe, we should reconnect ourselves with our richly inherited culture; in the form of the food we eat, the dresses we wear, mother tongue, songs and dances etc, he added.
Thongliu reiterated that one should never forget one’s own culture as it is the essence of what makes ‘you and I a Naga,’ and gives us pride to be ‘our true self.’
In conclusion he asked the young people to be sincere in whatever things they are pursuing in life, and only then, success will come.
Meanwhile, it was informed that the Anatongre Students’ Union organises a session triennially during which displaying of cultural objects is one of the hallmarks in addition to many other cultural activities.
This mini museum has been established for the very first time to showcase artefacts and traditional antiquities during its 59th session.
The Union’s Publicity and Information Secretary, Bajong KJ said that the students union and council would be discussing on construction of a permanent cultural mini-museum in the near future. Other rich cultural displays included men’s folk dancing (warrior dance) and women folks showcase the traditional way of cotton processing and yarning.
