IMD forecasts more rain in Nagaland, NE; heat wave continues in isolated places

The North-East region, including Nagaland, is expected to receive more rainfall in the next 3 days, according to weather update issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 1.

A fresh western disturbance provided respite in northwest India on Sunday but parts of central India and west Rajasthan continued to reel under a heat wave conditions and is expected to continue for a day or two, indicated the IMD’s ‘All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin’ issued Sunday evening.

In the NE, rainfall or thundershower were observed at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on May 1.

However, ‘heat wave to severe heat wave conditions’ prevailed in most parts of West Rajasthan and in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh while heat wave conditions prevailed in isolated pockets of Vidarbha and East Madhya Pradesh. The highest maximum temperature of 47.1°C was reported in Bikaner, West Rajasthan, the IMD informed.

Maximum Temperature was also above 5.1°C or more at many places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and West Rajasthan, and at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh.

Even at many places in the NE experiencing rainfall, the maximum temperature was above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Likewise, the minimum temperature was above normal at few places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Meanwhile, on May 2, the IMD forecasted ‘very likelihood’ of thundersquall accompanied with lightning/gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam and Meghalaya.

Heat wave conditions in isolated pockets were ‘very likely’ over West Rajasthan, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, it said. On May 3 and 4, heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Assam-Meghalaya and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura, the IMD said. Heat wave conditions in isolated pockets very likely over Vidarbha on May 3, it added.

As per the update, no ‘heat wave condition’ was forecasted on May 5.
