ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun Nagaland celebrates 2nd Mithun Day

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 3 (MExN): The ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development (AHV&DD) of Arunachal Pradesh and the National Rainfed Authority of India, New Delhi, marked the celebration of the Second Mithun Day. 

The event received technical support from ICAR-CIRC Meerut, ICAR-NRC on Yak, ICAR-NIBSM, ICAR-NMRI, and the Indian Meat Science Association.

The highlight of the celebration was the inauguration of a two-day National Seminar on “Integrated Mithun Farming for Enhancing Farmers’ Income in the North Eastern Region of India” by the Chief Guest, Excellency Lt. General KT Parnaik (Retd.), the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. The seminar is being held as part of the Mithun Day celebrations at the DK Convention Centre in Itanagar.

During the event, the Governor released status papers, leaflets, and literature on Mithun, and presented a souvenir of the celebration. He also honored progressive Mithun farmers with awards. 

In his inaugural address, the Governor expressed optimism that the seminar and celebrations would positively impact the protection, conservation, and optimal use of Mithun. He noted that Arunachal Pradesh is home to 89% of the global Mithun population, a fact that brings pride to the farmers and the people of the state.

The event was also graced by Guests of Honor, Gabriel D. Wangsu, Minister of AHV&DD, Dr. S. P. Kimothi, Member (AS&FS), ASRB, New Delhi, and Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, DDG (AS), ICAR, New Delhi. Special guests, former DDGs (AS) of ICAR, Dr. K.M.L. Pathak, and Dr. H. Rahman, were also in attendance.

The main objective of the Mithun Day celebration and the national seminar is to discuss the prospects and challenges in Mithun husbandry to enhance the productivity of these unique animals.
