‘Heavy to very heavy rainfall’ forecasted in Nagaland, NE as Cyclonic Remal intensifies

Cyclonic Storm “Remal” (pronounced as “Re-Mal”), which lay over the Northwest and adjoining Northeast & East-central Bay of Bengal at around 5:30 PM on May 25, is likely to intensify further into a ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ by May 26, the India Meteorological Department updated Saturday evening.

It is very likely to continue to move nearly northwards and intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by May 26 morning over Northwest and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by May 26 midnight with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph, it added.

As a result, the IMD forecasted light to moderate rainfall at most places over most North-East States, Bengal, and Odisha and “very heavy rainfall” at isolated places from May 26.

For Nagaland, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls” was predicted at isolated places from May 26-28. Besides, there is the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) in Nagaland from May 26-28, the IMD said.

However, on May 29, the rainfall intensity is likely to ‘come down’ to “heavy to very heavy rainfall” at isolated places, as well as thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places.
