Nagaland Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi today said that Nagaland is punching far below its weight.
“Our high literacy rates are not translating into jobs. Our hard-earned peace is not giving us economic prosperity,” he said while addressing Governor’s felicitation programme for toppers, rank holders and achievers of various Governor’s Awards of HSLC and HSSLC examination 2022 here at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan.
Being amongst the best that this state has to offer, you have to ask yourselves what you can do about this, he said.
Do not hesitate to incorporate the best practices of other cultures, while at the same time showcasing the values and strengths of your own society and community; he said adding that the feeling of compassion for entire humanity should be “your guiding principle.”
He told the HSLC and HSSLC toppers to draw inspiration from the great personalities and resolve to contribute to the well-being of the people of the state and the country as a whole.
“It is also my desire that you should advocate healthy lifestyle. We are all pained to hear that we hold some dubious distinctions in the country in terms of cancer and HIV incidences, drugs and alcohol abuse, tobacco use, etc,” he said and challenged all the talented, young students to be pioneers of change.
You must become the torch-bearers for a new, vibrant and healthy Nagaland, he told the gathering.
‘21st century is knowledge century’
He said that the people are entering a world where Artificial Intelligence is changing not just “how our society ‘does’ but how it ‘thinks.”
“We are at the edge of a society of cognitive machines. As such, the challenges and the opportunities before us – and particularly before those who are here today – are immense,” Governor Mukhi said.
He also stressed on the need for leading institutions to innovate both in terms of academic content and mechanism of delivery.
“New courses and programmes will have to be devised if our education system is to answer the needs of the next 25 or 30 years,” he said.
Stating that 21st century is described as knowledge century, he said “Knowledge power will determine the place of a nation in the global community.”
He also maintained the National Education Policy 2020 is a well-planned roadmap to develop an eco-system that will nurture the talent of the young generation.
The NEP aims to prepare them for the world of tomorrow, while also equipping them with the best of our own traditions, he said.
Take up agriculture as profession
Later, in interaction with HSLC and HSSLC toppers, Governor Mukhi stressed on the need to take up agriculture as profession. We have to adopt agriculture in the most modern means; he said adding that the government is there to help for that. He said that education does not mean that “You have to have some government job only.”
“Your knowledge should be converted into development of the state,” he told the toppers. The Governor also felt that the actual meaning of getting education would be to acquire knowledge and thereafter, use it in a way that can help develop the state.
