To fulfill the ‘long-felt desire’ of the State for a medical college, the works for the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) is being carried out on a ‘war-footing and nearing completion,’ informed an official report.
The first academic session will start by 2023-24 once the Letter of Permission (LoP) is granted by the National Medical Council (NMC), according to the Annual Administrative Report 2022-23 of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, tabled in the recently concluded first session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) in Kohima.
It further highlighted that a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the NIMSR Society and the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) on January 25, 2023 for affiliating the NHAK as the Teaching Hospital for institute to be functional as per NMC criteria.
The arrangement will continue till such time the NIMSR’s Teaching Hospital gets operational, the MoU said.
Meanwhile, the report noted that for a fully fledged Medical College, a 500-bedded teaching hospital is required and informed that the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) is willing to fund for a 400-bedded teaching hospital.
“The Government of India was also kind enough to accord approval of another Medical College at Mon with intake capacity of 100 MBBS students per year to meet the needs of the people and sanctioned Rs 325.00 crore,” it said.
Preliminary works for which have already begun and the major works will be carried out in full swing from the year 2023-24, it added.
