Dimapur, January 9 (MExN): Dr Neisatuo Mero, a native of Pfutseromi village has announced that he will be contesting the upcoming election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from Pfutsero Assembly Constituency as an Independent Candidate.
According to a press release received here on Sunday, Dr Mero held his first public gathering at Pfutseromi Village on January 7 during which he declared his candidature.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Neisatuo Mero thanked the village elders, local bodies and all the villagers from different walks of life for turning up in huge numbers in his first public meeting. He also thanked the village for bestowing its blessings on him to contest in the forthcoming elections, the release stated.
It also said that Dr Mero recalled that past leaders from the village namely Weprenyi Kapfo and Lhiweshelo Mero who were elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (1969-1974 and 1977-1982 respectively). While acknowledging that the two leaders sowed the seeds for the trees from which the village has been blessed, he however, lamented that for the past 40 years, ‘there is no one from the village to carry forth their torch.’ Therefore, he requested the village to give him the privilege to represent the constituency, the release stated.
Expressing his visions for the future of the Pfutsero constituency, Dr Mero laid down that education, health facilities, agriculture and horticulture sector would be his priorities.
As per the release, the intending candidate emphasised that schools and colleges, especially in the government sectors, are lagging behind despite having qualified faculties. Stating that now is the time to nurture the students and youths for the future, he further stated that reforms should be made so that parents would be encouraged to send their children to government schools and colleges.
On the health front, upgradation of health facilities in villages would be one of his main priorities, the release stated.
Dr Mero is also said to have encouraged the introduction of modern machineries and equipments to be invested in the agriculture sector as well as allied products in order to enable farmers to take up new methods of farming, in addition to introducing new cash crops, according to the release.
