Diesel and petrol will become slightly more expensive in Nagaland due to revised tax rates effective from midnight on June 30, 2024. On June 28, the Nagaland Government announced an increase in the tax rate on diesel from 16.5% or Rs 10.51 per litre to 17.20% or Rs 12.83 per litre (whichever is higher). This implies an increase of approximately Rs 2.32 per litre based on the fixed amount. However, based on the percentage rise, the effective increase per litre could range from Rs 1.81 to Rs 2.32.

Before the increase on June 30, the cost of diesel in Dimapur was Rs 84.64 per litre.

Meanwhile, a notification issued by Sentiyanger Imchen, Additional Chief Secretary & Finance Commissioner, showed a revision where the tax rate for petrol & other motor spirit has been revised from 25% or Rs 16.04 per litre to 21.75% or Rs 16.94 per litre. This represents a decrease in percentage terms but an increase in the fixed amount.

Strictly based on the increase in the fixed amount, petrol prices could rise by Rs 0.90. However, with a higher base price, the effective increase per litre could be higher. On Sunday, the price of regular petrol in Dimapur was Rs 96.17 per litre.

The actual increase will become clearer when the new rates come into effect at midnight on June 30. The notification from Sentiyanger Imchen, Additional Chief Secretary & Finance Commissioner, Government of Nagaland, also revokes previous notifications regarding surcharge, road maintenance cess, and rebates on diesel and petrol dated November 16, 2004, February 14, 2020, and November 4, 2021, respectively.
