In a major development, Nagaland Police Chief, T John Longkumer has officially stepped aside as DGP. Facing legal heat following a controversial move that extended his service beyond superannuation for six months in August 2022, Longkumer handed in his resignation letter to the state government on January 2.
Informing of the development, Kronu said that the Cabinet decided to accept his resignation but did not specify the grounds, only stating that the necessary formalities will be observed on January 7. It was not clear who would succeed Longkumer with Kronu commenting that the senior most would take charge.
A 1991 batch Chhattisgarh Cadre, Longkumer was to retire from service on August 31, 2022. As per a state government notification, issued on August 31, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension of service as well as his inter-cadre deputation tenure to the Nagaland Cadre “for a period of 6 months beyond his date of superannuation… in relaxation of Rule 16 (1) of the AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958, in public interest.”
He took charge as DGP of Nagaland on June 27, 2018 after an ‘inter-cadre’ deputation for a period of three years on “administrative grounds.” The initial 3-year tenure was further extended in June 2021 till August 31, 2022.
