Congress to contest ULB elections in Nagaland

All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur and Nagaland States, Girish Chodankar today announced that Congress has decided to contest the upcoming urban local bodies (ULB) elections in Nagaland scheduled on June 26.

“Our party will encourage the youngsters and women to be part of the new body of municipal and town councils and to be representatives of the wards in the municipal and town councils,” he said, addressing a press conference at Hotel Vivor, Kohima.

He maintained that participation in ULB elections will strengthen the concept of local self government and local leadership.

“We want maximum youth and women apart from senior members to be part of this election,” Chodankar noted, adding that Congress will represent various wards on behalf of the people.

As opposition party, he said, it is our constitutional duty and democratic duty to give a good option to the people of Nagaland.

Normally, in the local bodies elections, as a party, we don’t directly interfere nor AICC gets involve but since this election are on party symbol we are given them a full freedom to see that they truly represent the grassroot politics, he said.

“Once the grassroot level politics gets strengthen, once the grassroot level politics become very clean, morally high, they will dedicate themselves to the cause of the people,” Chodankar said.

Maintaining that the ULB polls are actually a nursery for tomorrow politicians, ministers, members of parliament, he said, “Maximum youth and women should participate in this election.”

Assuring that the AICC will provide helping hand as and when required, he said “Because we want to build a good grassroot level leader for the future.”

“We will do clean politics. We will really serve the people of Nagaland by protecting the interest of the Nagas, protecting the environment and various issues that the people of Nagaland are facing,” Chodankar said.

Meanwhile, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) President S Supongmeren Jamir informed that so far, 16 aspiring candidates came forward for Congress ticket for ULB elections.

Out of 16, eight are women, he informed, expecting more candidates.

‘INDIA bloc will form next govt’
Meanwhile, Chodankar exuded confidence that INDIA bloc would form the next government at the centre.

“We are confident of forming the government along with all our alliance partners,” he said, expressing hope that many more parties that were not with the bloc during the election will also join them.

We want to truly make it All India government by involving the other political parties minus BJP, he said.

India had voted against the fake promises, against the mis-governance, people had voted against price rise, inflation, Chodankar said.

By and large, he said, the people have voted for the future of India, for INDIA alliance.

Commenting on exit poll, he said the true picture will be cleared on June 4.

Meanwhile, Chodankar was also hopeful that Congress will win Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland.
