523 candidates in fray

523 candidates are in fray for the historic ULB Election 2024 on June 26 in Nagaland, taking place after a gap of two decades.

The state has three municipal councils and 36 town councils, and the last elections were held in 2004.

It is also historic as this would be the first-ever municipal elections in the state to be held with 33 per cent reservation for women.

The State Election Commission (SEC) today informed that out of 523 candidates, 325 male and 198 female are in the fray in 24 Municipal/Town Councils election spread across 214 wards.

A total of 223636 electors (Male-110115 & female -113521) will decide the fate of the contesting candidates.

Overall party wise candidates includes; BJP- 44, INC- 37, Independent-182, JDU- 9, LJP-7, NCP- 15, NDPP- 178, NPF- 21, NPP- 22, RPI (A)- 7 and RPP -1.

Polling hours is from 7: 30 AM to 4:00 PM. The voting will be held in 420 polling stations, which have been categorised as hyper-sensitive, sensitive and normal.

State Election Commissioner T. John Longkumer expressed satisfaction at the overall preparation undertaken so far.

While extending appreciation to all the election machinery involved in the electoral process, the Commission informed that it is continuously monitoring the election related activities in Municipal/Town Council areas going to the poll.

Reiterating the call for free, fair and peaceful election, the Commission expressed appreciation to various NGOs and the Tribal Bodies for joining in the appeal for conduct of a fair and peaceful election.

The Commission conveyed best wishes to all the candidates.

Further, the State Election Commissioner appealed to all the electors to enthusiastically participate in this democratic exercise.
While expressing the hope that the election would be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, the SEC cautioned that it would not shy away from initiating appropriate legal action against anyone or group that vitiates the same.

Meanwhile, Re-poll, if any, will take place on June 28 and counting and declaration of results on June 29.

Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, taking to ‘X,’ wrote: “As Nagaland participates in the ULB elections, I request all eligible voters to cast your vote. ULBs are crucial as they provide a platform for citizens’ participation in urban management, & development of our towns & cities. Best wishes for a peaceful & successful polling day.”
