What started as a lockdown assignment in school for 9-year-old Sofia Livimi Swu, has now translated into four books with the formal release of “Alphabet Poems” and “Whimsical Poems for Kids”.

The newly released books mark the 51st and 52nd publication of PenThrill Publication House and were launched by Y Kikheto Sema, IAS, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Nagaland at Hotel Japfü Kohima on Monday morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Y Kikheto Sema remarked that Sofia is extraordinary while expressing that “you are not doing different things but doing something differently.” Stating that writers are remembered forever, he impressed upon the need to build the new breed of writers who can write about own customs, our culture and tradition, and way of life.

“We should pray that there will be many Sofias in this generation, who will go on to write about our culture, diversity, ecosystem, clean election and about so many issues that will heal our land,” he said. He further commended Sofia’s parents, teachers and mentors who have helped her realise her passion and stated hope that she will continue to contribute to the society.

Talking about how Sofia began writing, her mother, Shekali Swu narrated that she had shown keen interest in reading from a very young age and wove stories out of every drawing. As booklovers, she said, she and her husband, James Swu also wanted to inculcate the love of reading in their children and always included books as one of the gifts and further try to set aside time for them to read.

She also recalled that Sofia started reading at the age of 5, following Phonics class that helped her to read quite early on her own. She went on to write her first letter at the age of 6 and eventually stories, the mother related. Referring to her personal favourite poem in the collection, Shekali Swu also shared, “One day, I scolded her for something I don’t remember and over dinner, she said, “Mother, I have a poem for you: When I am sad/ or when I am mad/ my mother makes me glad. I was touched by her poem.”

Kopele Mero Tepa, Special Educator & Proprietor, Bumblebee Inclusive School, Kohima said that it is a proud moment for the school while noting that not many people realise their passion so early in life. She commended Sofia’s parents while putting across that “without a doubt, home is the first environment where children are exposed to all forms of learning.”

Appreciating the time and the effort the parents have given to bring out the best out of their children’s lives, she also said that “Sofia is one of the most progressive children of lockdown”.

Even at school, she said Sofia is always expressive, outspoken and expects nothing but the best in herself. “Sofia is extraordinary whether it is in her reading or writing. Over all very smart and intelligent. Thank you for teaching us not to sit on our ideas. You truly are our inspiration!” she added.

Swu’s adventure series titled “My Adventure in Fairyland” and “My Adventure in Christmas Land” were published last year.
