The Government of Nagaland continues to receive large amount of grants from Delhi under various schemes of the Government of India. On August 24, 2017, the Social Welfare Department of the State received an amount of Rs 18,41,15000 (Rupees Eighteen crore forty one lakh and fifteen thousand only).
Coming under Central Sector Scheme it is 100% grants provided to the State. It may be mentioned that the funds are given to fulfil the objectives under Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India and they are released to the State Governments against specific projects for the welfare of Scheduled Tribes.
In its sanction letter the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has stated that the sum of Rs 18,41,15000 will be used by the government of Nagaland towards creation of capital assets for the year 2017-18. The funds have been allocated for projects across different sectors. They include Agriculture and Allied Sector, Education, Health, Skill Development, Income Generation and other activities.
A chunk of the fund has been given in the education sector. This includes construction of hostels in atleast nine places spread across Nagaland. Around Rs 750 lakhs has been allotted for this purpose. Another project called Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) has been allotted around Rs 897 lakhs for recurring expenditure, maintenance and additional infrastructure.
According to official information there are in total three Eklvya Model Residential School for tribal students located at Diphupar in Dimapur district, Tizit at Mon and at Tuensang town. The department of Social Welfare is the nodal department which oversees the functioning and that proper care and quality education are being provided to the tribal students in these 3 schools.
Earlier in another grant sanction under the same central scheme, an amount of Rs 1,83,96,000 (Rupees one crore eighty three lakh and ninety six thousand) was sanctioned as recurring cost for the three existing Eklvya Model Residential Schools in Nagaland.
