Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, DEC 21 (NPN) : After delays and much to the relief of motorists, the much-awaited inauguration of bridges over Dhansiri river at Kuda village (erstwhile Full Nagarjan) and Chathe river at Diphupar-A , 4th Mile area finally took place when deputy chief minister Y Patton on Monday officially declared them open.

Speaking on the occasion, Patton, who is also in-charge of PWD (R&B), credited department officials, contractor and stakeholders for their efforts in completing the bridges early. He said the RCC bridges would greatly benefit thousands of commuters daily.

Patton also expressed gratitude to chief minister Neiphiu Rio for asking PWD officials to commission the bridges for public use as a Christmas gift in order to greatly ease traffic flow during the festive season.

He also thanked legislators of Dimapur for their constant help and support, thereby allowing the State government to open the bridges for the welfare of people. He also acknowledged contractor Rokolhou Angami, for his tireless efforts to complete the work at the given timeframe.

Patton also recalled that signboards bearing the name of the contractor and executing authority were set up near the bridges as per his directive. He also unveiled granite signboards at both the sites.

Works & Housing department commissioner & secretary Rovilatuo Mor, who was also present, pointed out that the old steel girder bridge over Chathe river at Diphupar behind Referral Hospital was a single-lane bridge designed for class-B load. However, movement of heavy vehicles and excessive quarrying of sand and sand gravels within the vicinity of the bridge had weakened the bridge’s foundation.

He said the project for Chathe bridge was approved by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in July 2015 and Rs 37.66 crore sanctioned for the purpose. The bridge layout was given in October 2017 after dismantling the old bridge and work for the new bridge commenced.

The project for the bridge at Kuda village was approved by MoRTH in July 2015 at an estimated cost of Rs 37.95 crore. Both the works were awarded to M/s Naagaamii Infratech Pvt Ltd, he said.

He explained that earlier there was a proposal to construct the new bridge after dismantling the old bridge but later it was decided to preserve it as a heritage structure after carrying out restoration works.

Mor, however, pointed out that due to issues of relocation and negotiations for construction of the new bridge, work could not begin immediately after work order was issued. He said the contractor then took the initiative of engaging with the landowners seeking land for the new bridge after which layout was prepared in October 2017.

Host of ministers including Jacob Zhimomi, Pangyu Phom, Neibu Kronu and Kashiho Sangtam, advisers– Nicky Kire, Tovihoto Ayemi, Kazheto Kinimi, Zhaleo Rio and NPF legislator Moatoshi Longkumer attended the inaugural programmes.
