Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today urged upon the people of Nagaland to consider doing away with the present election system in the village council sets ups in the state.
Inaugurating the new village council building of Seiyhama village under Kohima district, Rio said that the time has come to do away with election systems in the village set up and suggested the usage of search committees for electing village council leaders on consensus. This, he said would avert division and discord amongst the villagers.
He also suggested the same system for tribal hohos and Village Development Boards.
Further stating that the rich culture, traditional practices, and customary laws testify the uniqueness of the Nagas, Rio stressed on the need to uphold and strengthen the customary laws and its conduct in delivering justice.
On that note, he said that the construction of the new council building of Seiyhama village was made possible through the ambience of unity and cooperation amongst the villagers and hoped that it would become of a house of ushering fair judgment on various matters.
He called upon the villagers to continue to maintain and uphold the spirit of oneness to stay connected to various schemes and developmental packages.
Also speaking on the occasion, Vibeilietuo Kets, president NDPP 11th Northern Angami-II A/C was appreciative of the state government for the various undertakings in the agri and allied sector in the state. He called upon the villagers to come forward and put sincere efforts towards large scale production, which will go a long way in boosting the rural economy.
Seiyhama Village Council chairperson Rheituolie Metha, Seiyhama GB Thekruneio Thevo and Seiyhama GB Thinuonei-u Thevo also spoke briefly during the programme.
It was also informed that the new village council building was constructed through funds from different sources including Rs 30 lakh from Neiphiu Rio, Rs 2 lakh from Dr Neiphrezo Keditsu and household contributions.
