NCD welcomes move; urges road maintenance work by DUDD

Dimapur police’s odd-even traffic regulation came into effect across the municipal area of the district on Tuesday. This measure is aimed at mitigating traffic congestion during the festive season and addressing the ongoing rehabilitation work at the Road Over Bridge (ROB) near Hotel Sente on National Highway (NH) 29.

At Batacharali, one of the busiest intersections in Dimapur, vehicular traffic was noticeably lighter in the evening compared to other days, following the implementation of the new regulation. Similarly, there were visible signs of reduced traffic congestion at other intersections as well.

As per the police, the odd-even system will remain in place for one month or until the completion of the rehabilitation work.

Meanwhile, the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), in a press statement via its Vice President, GK Rengma, and Convenor of the Vigilance Committee, N Joseph Lemtur, welcomed the initiative by the Dimapur Traffic Police. It also highlighted a few issues that “needed urgent attention and implementation” due to the bottleneck of traffic flow at the lone railway flyover.

Among other issues, it strongly advocated for the immediate resumption of public bus services, both day and night, from the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminus), particularly for those operating from the Supermarket bus station. This would not only ease the existing heavy traffic congestion but also ensure that government infrastructure built specifically for such designated purposes is fully utilized, it added.

The NCD also urged the Dimapur Urban Development Department to complete all road maintenance work in and around the city before the end of the festive season.

As previously published, the odd-even system being implemented will allow vehicles to ply based on the following guidelines: On odd dates (e.g., 11th, 13th, 15th, etc.), only vehicles with registration numbers ending in odd digits (1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) will be permitted to travel. On even dates (e.g., 10th, 12th, 14th, etc.), only vehicles with registration numbers ending in even digits (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8) will be allowed on the road.

However, this restriction will not be enforced on Sundays, December 25 (Christmas Day), and January 1, 2025 (New Year’s Day).
Government and emergency service vehicles, school buses, public transport (four-wheeler and two-wheeler taxis), with the exception of autorickshaws, are exempt from the regulation.

In addition, those attending weddings, carrying sick persons, school and college duty vehicles, church pastors, reverends, government employees, teachers, post office staff, bank staff, online delivery personnel, press and media, and outsiders are also exempted.
