DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 8 (MExN): The traditional muzzle-loading firearm experience has become a major attraction at the Hornbill Festival, drawing tourists from across the country and beyond. This activity, which according to the DIPR is deeply rooted in Naga heritage, offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural history at Kisama Heritage Village.
Two seasoned Konyak gunsmiths, K. Moba and Nyeiba, from Changlangshu village in Mon district, have set up shop at Craftscape, Kisama, where they are showcasing their expertise in traditional gun making. With 35 years of experience, their handcrafted muzzle-loading guns are renowned for their quality and durability, attracting buyers from Nagaland and beyond.
The single-barrelled guns are priced at Rs 8,500, while the double-barrelled versions cost Rs 18,000. The duo also accepts special orders and is crafting firearms on-site during the festival.
The Konyak Nagas, known for their expert gunsmithing skills, have a long-standing tradition of making firearms. While the exact origin of this practice remains obscure, it has been passed down through generations within the community. Traditionally, the guns are handmade by village blacksmiths using a combination of wood and recycled metals.
At the Konyak Morung, visitors can participate in a muzzle-loading gun-shooting experience for a fee of Rs 200 per shot. Tourists are guided by experts as they fire these historic weapons, which were once integral to hunting and defense practices in the region.
The activity not only provides an adrenaline rush but also sheds light on the cultural and historical significance of muzzle-loading guns, which played a vital role in traditional warfare and ceremonial occasions.
By engaging with this and other attractions, visitors gain a deeper appreciation of Nagaland’s rich heritage at the ongoing Hornbill Festival.
