Nagaland Gov visits Mon, calls for united effort against drug menace

Dimapur, October 18 (MExN): During his visit to Mon district on Thursday, Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan highlighted the critical issue of drug abuse plaguing the state, particularly among the youth. Addressing officials from various departments and civil society organizations at the DC’s Conference Hall in Mon, the Governor lamented the severe toll that drug abuse inflicts on individuals, families, and communities.

“Drug abuse not only destroys individuals but brings untold misery to families and society as a whole,” he said. Governor Ganesan called for a unified effort by civil society groups and law enforcement agencies to curb the inflow of drugs into the state and ensure they are inaccessible to the youth. He emphasized that a collective approach is essential to safeguard the younger generation and preserve the social fabric of the community.

In addition to addressing the issue of drug abuse, the Governor praised Mon’s rich cultural heritage and urged the community to protect and promote their unique traditions. He highlighted the significance of the Konyak people’s vibrant customs, including their traditional dances, wood carvings, and the Aoleang Festival, which symbolize the enduring spirit of the region. “Let us host more cultural days in schools and debate the relevance of our culture while innovating to keep it alive for the next generation,” he encouraged.

Governor Ganesan also commended healthcare workers for their resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed the importance of accessible healthcare for all. He urged the health department to promote government health schemes, such as the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, which aims to eradicate tuberculosis in India by 2025.

Touching on infrastructure, the Governor spoke about the ongoing road construction under the Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). He assured the residents that these projects would soon connect the border areas with quality roads, emphasizing that robust infrastructure is crucial for progress and connectivity.

In education, the Governor expressed the need to invest in Mon’s educational institutions, urging leaders and educators to inspire students and equip them for the future. He mentioned the upcoming second medical college in Nagaland, which he said will soon contribute to the state’s healthcare services.

Governor Ganesan called on citizens to actively participate in shaping Nagaland’s future, emphasizing collaboration between local communities, civil society, and the government to build a sustainable and progressive roadmap for the state.

Earlier, the Governor was received by the officials in Mon helipad and Guard of Honor at Walo Guest House. He was welcomed with Konyak shawls and the traditional gifts by DC Mon at DC’s Conference Hall, Mon. Deputy Commissioner Mon, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS Chaired the programme and welcomed the special guest and the members. 

A brief PPT on the profile of Mon District was presented by SDO (C) Hq. Mon. Konyak Union gave a representation to the Governor reminding of the FNT, while the President of Konyak Students’ Union highlighted the road condition, Medical and Education facilities in Mon District. Rev. Metjen Konyak, Executive Secretary of KBBB, highlighted the Konyaks, it’s land and Konyaks living across the borders.  

A PPT on Departmental activities was also presented by NHIDCL, PWD (R&B), CMO Mon, PWD (R&B) Aboi, EE PHED, DEO Mon and Project Director, RD, Mon.
