Dimapur, July 6 (MExN): A vehicle was damaged by falling rocks along the Paglapahar stretch of National Highway-29 on July 5, bringing back memories of a similar tragic accident that occurred along the same stretch almost to the day last year. There were four people in the Mahindra Bolero including the driver, all of whom sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, has issued a safety advisory for all commuters. The advisory comes amid ongoing heavy rainfall, which has rendered the area particularly hazardous.

“In light of the rockfall incident and the continuous rainfall, the Paglapahar stretch of National Highway-29 has become extremely vulnerable,” stated an advisory issued by the Commissioner’s office. “Our primary concern is the safety of the public, and we urge all commuters to exercise extreme caution.”

Travellers have been advised against commuting along the vulnerable stretch during periods of heavy rainfall. “Non-essential movement along this part of the highway should be avoided until conditions improve,” the advisory emphasized. It specifically highlights the dangers of traveling at night. “Due to reduced visibility and increased risk of further rockfalls, night-time travel should be strictly avoided,” it added.

For those who must travel, the advisory urged that travellers should keep a considerable distance from the sides of the highway where the rockfall occurred and proceed with utmost caution. It further cautioned that non-essential stoppage can increase the risk of being caught in a potential rockfall.

The Commissioner’s office added: “we are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as needed. Public cooperation is essential in preventing any untoward incidents during this period of adverse weather conditions.”

Even the Chief Minister made mention of the accident while speaking at an event in Chümoukedima. His motorcade travelled by the same stretch of the highway, on Friday, not long after the rockfall.
