Mission to get rid of plastic waste at Doyang reservoir commenced

An Area Team  constituted by Deputy Commissioner, Wokha Ajit Kumar Ranjan from the departments of DDMA, Divisional Forest Department , Fishery Department, Water Resource, NEPCO and EAC commenced their task of cleaning and removal of plastic waste accumulated at Doyang reservoir on June 8.

After a day’s work, a meeting was conducted at Doyang among the stakeholders, village council chairmen and representatives from various villages along with Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan and Wokha SP.

During the meeting, Ranjan underscored the importance of the Action Plan Mission to clean the Doyang reservoir as a significant social endeavour. Encouraging the local community, he urged them to heighten awareness regarding waste management. While recognising the hurdles of the mission, he provided reassurance that the department is fully dedicated to its success and urged the villagers to aid in crafting an action plan and engage fervently in the cleanliness campaign, offering support and assistance in any capacity possible.

He also informed that the cleanup process would continue for two to three days, stating it as a short-term measure while long-range strategies are being devised. Emphasising the significance of safeguarding the Doyang reservoir, he acknowledged it as one of Nagaland’s valuable assets and urged the community to shoulder the responsibility for its upkeep. 

While responding to concerns regarding NEPCO’s jurisdiction over the area and its obligation to handle cleaning duties, he clarified that while NEPCO generates power, the local community get significant benefits from the river. Consequently, he advocated for a collective sense of ownership and concerted efforts towards the village’s enhancement.

L. Jonjibemo Odyou of DDMA Wokha underscored that this initiative ‘Clean Doyang Mission’ is initiated to come up with strategies to clean the accumulated waste at Doyang.  He also outlined the plans and strategies to tackle the issue, with a commitment to adjust them if necessary. Odyou also appealed for support and cooperation from local communities.

Chairpersons and representatives from various villages in the area, present at the meeting, expressed gratitude to the district administration, relevant departments, and stakeholders for initiating efforts to clean up the accumulated waste at Doyang. They also stated that they will extend their support in any way possible during this cleanliness mission.
