Kohima, May 28 (MExN): With the cyclonic storm Remal (pronounced as “Re-Mal”) making landfall over coastal Bangladesh and West Bengal, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) issued a weather advisory on Monday.

According to the NSDMA, due to the cyclonic storm, heavy overcast rain to moderate light rain is likely to occur throughout the districts of Nagaland this week.

Squally wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, are expected over the state, it said.

During this period, there is a moderate risk of flash floods in a few rivers and foothill areas of the state within the next 24 hours due to persistent rainfall, it added.

In this connection,  the NSDMA, Home Department, urged the public to exercise caution and avoid going to rivers and lakes to prevent potential drowning and casualties due to flash floods and landslides induced by cyclonic persistent rainfall.

Furthermore, it requested all District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments to remain on alert to attend to any eventualities and save lives and properties.

The cyclonic storm system is expected to move north-northeastwards and gradually weaken further into a deep depression by the evening of May 27, it added.

Meanwhile,  the NSDMA updated on X Monday evening that a heavy windstorm swept across Chuchuyimlang village under Mokokchung district affecting 9 households on May 25.
