State Cabinet appeal ENPO to participate in ULB elections

The Nagaland State Cabinet, once again, made an appeal to the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) and its constituent bodies to participate in the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in the state.

Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the State Cabinet in Kohima, Minister of Power & Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye stated that ULB elections is being conducted on the directions of Supreme Court after the prolonged legal battle involving the women’s reservation in the ULB in the State in the larger interest of the public and their welfare.

Kenye informed that the State Cabinet in its sitting today deliberated on the issue of public emergency and abstention from central and state elections by ENPO. On the issues relating to Frontier Nagaland Territory, Kenye said that no quarters have any misunderstanding or misconception on the issue. He also pointed that the State Government had recommended the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). 

Kenye addressed that the ULB is a semi-Autonomous body for local self government to manage their own affairs at their own local levels. The ULB election is to do with the grassroots level developments and is for the upliftment of our citizen, he said.
He, meanwhile, appealed the ENPO and others to actively participate in the upcoming ULB election to bring in more funds from the centre and to further develop “our town councils.”

On FMR 
On the issue of Free Movement Regime (FMR), Kenye said that the State Assembly has already passed resolution in this regard and requested the Government of India to reconsider their decision of scrapping of FMR.

“Since the State Government is taking all necessary action with GoI and the latter has also assured to reconsider the issue, the NGOs are requested to have patience till GoI takes a considered decision in this regard,” he said.
