Severe winds wreak havoc on power lines across Nagaland

Strong winds continued to batter Nagaland on Tuesday, even as the weather condition brought about by ongoing cyclonic circulation in the region, caused damages to transmission lines, affecting power supply across the State.

Beginning from Easter Sunday, the Power department reported that storm and gusty winds had created havoc across the state and its officers and staff were working round the clock to rectify and restore power supply.

The Department’s Engineer-in-Chief, Moa Aier, told The Morung Express that 50% of the transmission lines have been damaged due to strong winds, resulting in prolonged outages in large swathes of areas.

This problem has been compounded with a shortage of workforce, he added.

As of April 1, the State had an availability of 61.8 megawatts (MW) against the demand of 15.5 MW, an update received here stated.

Meanwhile, several feeders were under temporary shutdown due to the damages.

These included the 33 KV substations – Referral, Medziphema, Metha Colony, Padum Pukhuri, Supermarket – and the 66 KV substations – Power House, Nito Farm, Chümoukedima, Sovima, Ganesh Nagar, 11 KV Chekiye Village, Thilixu Area, Electrical Colony, Naharbari, and Kuda Village. These shutdowns have been initiated as a precautionary measure to save equipment damage.

Other districts where temporary shutdowns were implemented include Kohima load center (all lines), 66 KV Mokokchung-Tuli T/L, and 33 KV Meluri-Mokokchung, which were deemed to be faulty.
