With an aim to promote Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities and awareness on election, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner & District Election Officer, Wokha organised a half-marathon race for students of Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha on March 19. The Half Marathon Race flagged off from Traffic Police Point Wokha at 6:30 am and culminated at Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha.
SDO Civil Wokha and SVEEP Nodal Officer, Nuhuta Tunyi highlighted that the half marathon race is being conducted under the aegis of the Office of DC and DEO, following a special programme called SVEEP (Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation). He emphasized that SVEEP aims to raise awareness about the electoral process and the role of the Election Department. With the elections approaching, the primary goal is to spread the message that voting is a fundamental right of every individual, and he encourage for strong participation from eligible voters.
Tunyi emphasised the participants about their rights, underscoring that despite their youth, they are the future of society and serve as the upcoming electorate.
He also pointed out the importance of equipping them to exercise their voting rights when they reach voting age.
Moreover, he urged the participants to actively share knowledge about voting rights with their peers, elders, and community members to enhance engagement in elections. On behalf of the District Administration and Election Department, he also expressed gratitude to the Government Higher Secondary School for their support in organising the event.
The participants competed in the Male and female categories where the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from both categories.
Hangkai Konyak emerged the winner in the female’s category, with Lothungbeni Kikon securing second place and Zuchanbeni Humtsoe finishing third. In the male’s category, Puchong claimed the first prize, followed by Merichan Ngullie in second place, and Y Renjanthung Kikon in third.
The winners received cash prizes and certificates, while all participants were recognized with certificates of participation.
