Massive fire razes over 110 commercial shops in Kohima

A massive fire broke out in the wee hours of September 9 at Peraciezie High School colony, Kohima and over 110 commercial shops were burnt to ashes as per early official estimate.

The fire, which reportedly broke out at around  2:30 a.m. on September 9, has destroyed the market by leaving behind a trail of destruction. 

The market, housing several shops such as poultry, wholesalers, vegetables etc, has been reduced to ashes, besides partial damage to the adjoining buildings including Vishal Mart.

Despite the rain, the ferocious fire continued consuming the entire market, which was speculated to have started from a short circuit.

 

A total of seven fire tenders from various fire stations and agencies were pressed into service to doused off the fire. Firefighters and emergency personnel continued to contain the inferno till late in the evening.

Details assessment of properties could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, as firefighter continued to extinguish remaining hotspots. However, there were no  immediate reports of injuries.

Meanwhile, as per the State DIPR, the fire at completely razed down AV Market, Suokhrie Market and few residential houses while causing partial damaged to the adjoining commercial buildings. 

As per sources, around 113 commercial shops have been fully burnt down by the fire, it added. 

The fire incident was responded through the collaborative effort of various line departments which include Fire and Emergency services, District Disaster Management Authority, Kohima Municipal Council, District Administration, 1st Assam Rifles, D’ Block, Peraciezie Traders Union, Kohima Village Youth Organization and other local organisations.

The Kohima District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) also conducted spot verification and damaged assessment where it extended immediate financial assistance to the affected house owners and displaced families, the State DIPR informed.
